LION COMMITTEE FORMED
A committee whose mandate is to oversee the breeding and keeping of lions in captivity has been formed. The committee was formed at a meeting held recently at Parks and Wildlife Management Authority head office. The objective of the meeting was to define the breeding and keeping of lions, to identify and discuss issues related to the breeding and keeping of lions in captivity and also chat the way forward among other issues related to the lions.

600 CYCLIST for Tour De Tuli 2010…
Its official the 2010 Tour De Tuli Mapungubwe is on and the excitement is even bigger and better than last year. This is evidenced by the number of participants who number not less than 600 as compared to last year’s 300 cyclists. The figure 600 excludes support staff so picture what the venue will be like if the support staff is added to the figure. Local and international media who graced last year’s occasion are also expected to take part in this year’s event. The event has already generated a lot of interest from the local media who missed out on last year’s edition but are vowing not to miss out this year.

EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENT
The Board Chairman of Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, Mr George Pangeti notifies the appointment of Mr. Vitalis Chadenga to the post of Director General of Parks and Wildlife Management Authority with effect from 1st May 2010. Mr. Chadenga who until his appointment was Director Conservation takes over from Dr Morris Mtsambiwa whose contract expired in March 2010.
BOUNDLESS SOUTHERN AFRICA DVD...
Final editing to a one hour fifty minute DVD dubbed the Boundless Southern Africa Expedition was done in Johannesburg South Africa. The DVD features His Excellency President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe .Cde Mugabe delivered a speech during a meeting of heads of state which was held in Namibia last year. In it are two up sounds from Environment and Natural Resources Management Minister Cde F.D.C.Nhema.Also featured in the DVD is the Director Conservation who is now the Acting Director General for PWMA Mr. Vitalis Chadenga.

FAREWELL – FAUSTINO TAKAWIRA MADAWO
Impact that will never fade
The former charismatic leader, mentor, team player and friend, Faustino Takawira Madawo, retired on 31 January 2010 after over 40 years of service with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA). At the time of his retirement, Faustino was serving as the Area Manager for Chipinda Pools in Gonarezhou National Park (GNP), Southeast Zimbabwe. Throughout his career Faustino was instrumental in enhancing conservation efforts in the Save-Runde sub-region of GNP (i.e. Chipinda Pools) and several other stations where he was once based at throughout his career. He left good footprints on the sands of GNP, the region and the entire ZPWMA. The impact Faustino made will never fade, and he will always be remembered.

POACHER SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS…
A Beitbridge magistrate Mr. Jabulani Muzinyati has sentenced a poacher to six months in prison. The poacher Hardlife Nkomo was on April 20 2010 sentenced for illegally hunting rhinos and was further given two years for possessing an unlicensed weapon. Innocent Shumbayaonda presided over the matter.

“WE ARE NOT HERE TO PUNISH BUT TO HELP”, CITES SECRETARY GENERAL SAYS.
CITES Secretary General Mr. Willem Wijnstekers arrived in Zimbabwe yesterday afternoon accompanied by CITES Chief Executive Officer for the meetings of the Conference of the Parties Mr. John Sellar.Speaking at Harare International Airport,Mr Wijnstekers said “we are not here to punish but to help”. He added that he wanted to get first hand information on poaching statistics which have been circulated in the media.

CITES Secretary General Mr. Willem Wijnstekers is expected in Zimbabwe on Monday 8 January 2010.Mr Wijnstekers will be accompanied by Mr. John Sellar, Chief Enforcement Officer.Mr Wijnstekers and Mr. Sellar leave for South Africa on Friday the 12th of January 2010.

A RHINOCEROS POACHER WAS SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS IN PRISON
Tichaona Mutyairi aged 28, who was arrested on 27 October 2009 after poaching a rhinoceros was sentenced to 17 years in prison by Masvingo Magistrate, Walter Chikwanha on January 11 2010. Ten years was suspended on condition the accused pays restitution of US$120 000,00 to the state. Mutyairi who was in the company of his cousin, Samson Mazhongwe and Ishmael Mazhongwe, proceeded to Matendere Range where they intended to kill rhinos for their horns. The Prosecutor in this case was Tafirei Tandirai.
